Wise and Well Club members 'march' over 800 miles

An online club that supports older people to develop their mental and physical health is celebrating after collectively walking over 800 miles in one month.

The Wise and Well Club, which is run by Shropshire Rural Communities Charity (RCC), hosted the ‘March March’ challenge for its members to encourage them to be active, with different walking routes set as targets.

The final total, 840 miles, was achieved collectively by 14 people across Shropshire, and is equal to the route taken by the fastest ever Land’s End to John O’Groats walk by a woman – Ann Sayer – in 1980.

Shropshire RCC Development Officer Susie Hancock runs the club. She said: “Thank you to all our members for embracing the challenge and marching their way through the last few weeks of lockdown with such energy!

“After the first week, with 99 miles, we had already achieved the famous Scottish West Highland Way from Milngavie to Fort William and by week three we had reached 500 miles, which is the full distance of the Camino de Santiago.

“While we can’t travel to these places ourselves at the moment, using those distances has helped our members to focus on reaching their goals and have fun, plus it’s been a great distraction from the local walking routes we’re all now very familiar with!”

The “interesting and motivational” challenge of tracking progress was welcomed by the club’s members, with some still submitting their weekly mileage despite the 'March March' ending.

The Wise and Well Club is free and open to people in Shropshire aged 65 to 95. There are currently over 50 members, who receive information and advice on fitness and wellbeing through a regular e-newsletter and are invited to take part in activities.

Last October the group collectively walked the length of a marathon, raising just under £600 for Shropshire RCC and other local charities.

Members are also invited to free seminars on different themes around health, with the last session focussing on the Covid-19 virus and how the different vaccines against it work.

Shropshire RCC’s Wise & Well Club is open to new members. To find out more, please email Susie - Susie.Hancock@community-resource.org.uk
