Virtual club to take on Captain Tom 100 Challenge

Shropshire RCC's online club that supports older people to develop and maintain their mental and physical health is taking part in a fundraising weekend celebrating the life of Captain Sir Tom Moore.

The Wise and Well Club is embracing the Captain Tom 100 Challenge and aiming to walk 100 miles as a virtual team this Bank Holiday weekend.

The new fundraising initiative is taking place from Friday 30 April to Monday 3 May – what would have been Captain Tom’s birthday weekend – and will see people from all over the world to take on a challenge based around the number 100 to raise funds for charity.

Members of the Wise and Well Club will also each attempt to complete 100 ‘Sit-to-Stand’ exercises across the four days. The everyday exercise is important for maintaining leg strength and independence, and involves sitting with arms crossed, standing up fully then sitting down again in a controlled manner.

Shropshire RCC Development Officer Susie Hancock runs the club. She said: “I’m thrilled our Wise and Well Club members are joining in with the Captain Tom 100 Challenge and taking the opportunity to keep active and raise some much-needed funds for charity. “As Captain Tom so wonderfully showed and what our members are demonstrating, is that your age doesn’t have to hold you back from taking part, having fun and finding joy, even when times are hard.”

Captain Tom’s daughter, Hannah Ingram-Moore, said: “We are so grateful for the incredible support we have received since my father started his record-breaking fundraising walk and that his message of hope was shared with the world. Captain Tom was very proud to be able to leave behind the growing legacy of his Foundation.

“We know he would love the idea of inviting everyone to get involved and share their Captain Tom 100 so that together we can ensure ‘Tomorrow will be a good day’. We look forward to celebrating with you on what would have been his 101st birthday weekend – it’s going to be fun!”

The Wise and Well Club is free and open to people in Shropshire aged 65 and over. There are currently over 50 members, who receive information and advice on fitness and wellbeing through a regular e-newsletter and are invited to take part in activities.   Last October the group collectively walked the length of a marathon, raising just under £600 for Shropshire RCC and other local charities.

The club is open to new members; to find out more, please email Susie Hancock - Susie.Hancock@community-resource.org.uk
