Cupcakes, concerts and getting competitive - a Care and Share update

This Dementia Action Week, Care and Share Project Officer Nickie Long shares some insight into one of her Care and Share groups.

‘How do I pipe musical notes onto cupcakes?’

My colleagues don’t bat an eyelid - they’re used to these types of questions from me. They’ve already received emails this week asking if they have any seashells, wine bottle corks and musical instruments I can borrow.

The questions and requests are all for a good cause – making my Care and Share sessions as fun and interactive as possible for the people who attend. Care and Share groups are for people with dementia and the loved ones who care for them.

The meet ups offer ‘mutual support’, which mean partners can take turns to have a break knowing their loved ones are safe and happy in the company of the rest of the group.

A grant from the National Lottery Community Fund is allowing us to expand the project from the two we previously had (in Albrighton and Market Drayton) into seven across the county.

One of our new groups – Church Stretton – met this week. It has only been running two months and is already buzzing with couples getting to know each other and joining in with the activities.

As this year’s Dementia Action Week is about encouraging people to ask questions, I incorporated that into this week’s session – which was music-themed – with a lively game of ‘toss and talk’.

It revealed a number of things about the couples attending – favourite artists and bands, the last concert they’d been to and their preference (or not!) to opera.

A memory game made up of musical items and a quiz on 50s music brought out people’s competitive sides - congratulations to Ken and Blanche who won both games!

The afternoon finished with tea and cupcakes, decorated with musical notes I’m happy to report.

We are currently looking for volunteers to help deliver our Care and Share sessions in Church Stretton, and volunteers and participants for a new group in Much Wenlock. If you’re interested, please get in touch with Nickie by emailing Nickie.long@community-resource.org.uk or calling 01743 237888.
