Community Resource to host falls prevention events in Three Parishes

A programme to help to reduce the risk of falling for older people is taking place in Three Parishes over the next few weeks.

Community Resource is hosting its Functional Fitness MOTs at Gobowen Scout Hall between 9.30am and 2pm on Thursday 30 September and Weston Rhyn Village Institute on Tuesday 12 October.

The event, which is open to anyone aged between 65 and 95, also supports attendees to become or stay physically active. Activities include one-to-one fitness tests measuring strength, balance, flexibility and stamina.

There is also information on how to reduce the risk of falling - with a demonstration of how to get up from the floor after a fall – plus a free taster exercise class.

Community Resource Development Officer Susie Hancock said: “We’re thrilled to be able to restart our Functional Fitness MOTs and get out and see people face-to-face again.

“We understand there may be people who have become less mobile and don’t feel as steady on their feet as they did before the pandemic, so we’re encouraging anyone who is looking for support and advice on how to reduce their risk of falling to get in touch and book a place.”

The event will be hosted with Covid precautions in place, including increased ventilation of the hall and spaced seating, while the fitness testers will be wearing visors and gloves and have use of their own testing equipment.

The Functional Fitness MOTs are part of a series of information events that have been commissioned by the Three Parishes Big Local programme, with support from Shropshire Council.

Upcoming events taking place include diabetes awareness, living with hearing loss and managing arthritis.

Functional Fitness MOTs are free to attend, with the option to make a charitable donation to Community Resource on the day. Attendance is by appointment and booking is essential.
