Chairman to take on Longmynd challenge

The Chairman of Shropshire RCC and his son are tackling a gruelling hike over Shropshire’s hills to raise money for community groups in the county.

Hugh Strickland and 18-year-old John are competing in the Longmynd Hike – a 50-mile challenge which starts in Church Stretton and follows a route covering eight summits and 8,000 feet of climbing.

The aim of the challenge is to finish it in less than 24 hours.

Hugh and John are raising money for the RCC’s Shropshire Community Fund, which provides grants to help community organisations deliver their activities.

Over the past three years as Shropshire RCC’s chairman, Hugh has seen first-hand how vital the grant scheme can be for small organisations, as well as the communities they support.

He said: “These little Shropshire groups are usually run by volunteers. They have very little resource in order to fundraise and struggle to compete with larger charities to generate money.

“And yet these small groups are the bedrock of community life in Shropshire. They organise activities for young people, and older, perhaps lonely isolated people; they look after the local environment and heritage sights; provide entertainment for local residents; and ensure that village halls and community buildings stay viable.

“They are often invisible but we’d all miss them if they disappear. By contributing to the Shropshire Community Fund, you can help to ensure that there will be money to support them.”
